It all started with German fashion designer Philipp Plein, who created a dress for a limited-edition Barbie® doll. One of the Top Model contestants posed in a life-sized version of the gown. In 2008, Vogue Italia broke barriers by releasing an issue of the magazine that featured nothing but black models. The editors wanted to send a message about diversity in the fashion industry - and they succeeded. The magazine later reported a 40% increase in sales.
This year, the Black Issue is back, now with a special collector's version devoted to exclusively to Barbie®.
"Barbie® has been an icon for whole generations," says Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani. "That's why I wanted to give a strong sign...and dedicate the anniversary issue to Black Barbie®."
The Barbie® edition pays tribute to black and African-American Barbie® dolls with fashionable photographs inspired by the larger magazine.
"Barbie® has been a mirror of the times for 50 years," notes Mattel Senior Vice President Richard Dickson. "Italian Vogue has captured the essence of this positioning and her rich heritage in fashion and glamour in a way we have never seen before."
Danielle Scutt & Rosksanda Ilincic for Barbie® Designers will create 50 limited edition Barbie dolls to celebrate Barbie's 50th Anniversary. Dolls will be sold through exclusive fashion retailer Dover Street Market
